I can say without reservation that the Boutique Design aesthetic has usurped the Big Box aesthetic and is the most uninspired design style that has hit the fitness industry. It's a cliche employed by the top gym design firms and pretty much all design firms across the US.
The formula is a set of standard cliches, angular geometry,a modern reception desk with a "nice finish", minimal design features, again, it's a design style that looks like something you might see in a hotel, restaurant or retail store...
This design style is pedestrian and played out...
